Description

“The Arts in Film” has been a core element, a large Section actually, of the Wine Country Film Festival from the very beginning in 1986. The intent of the Arts in Film is to present works that inform and inspire, that provide insight into the inner workings of art forms that are enjoyed in their finished product, but the process is often hidden. Film can draw back the veil and reveal the arts in a new way. Here are a series of short films that celebrate DANCE and MOVEMENT and excite the senses.

Currencies

DIR: Maggie Heaman  United States, 20140615, 5 Minutes

What is happening to American arts companies?

Fading Nocturne

DIR: Rowden Metzger United States, 20150501, 27 Minutes

In this insightful short drama, acclaimed choreographer Alex(Rowden Metzger, noted dancer and instructor) struggles to complete a new work as his past haunts him.  As the journey of his trauma is revealed we get an honest view of the creative process and what goes into drawing fine art from the depths of one’s heart.

Molat & Molat

DIR: Katharine Duhamel United States, 20160129, 6 Minutes

This is the story of Pascal Molat dancing, as told by Matisse Molat, age 5.

Syncretic Noise

DIR: Stephen Bullen United States, 2015, 5 Minutes
A man dances secluded from a city at battle with itself. Defying conventional logic and storytelling, layered soundscapes and symbolic visuals fuel the dark atmosphere. In a hyper society portrayed in time-lapses the dancer’s natural motion continues across cuts over discontinuities of space from forest landscapes to gritty urban life.

The Teacup

DIR: Elif Boyacıoğlu Ireland / Turkey, 2015, 5 Minutes
A thought-provoking, traditional animation, this story tells the story of a man who fears going outside, until one day a knock on the door tempts him to change his mind. Poignant, childlike and atmospherically crafted, the film interweaves gentle childlike qualities with serious moral undertones.”

The Whirl

DIR: Celal Argın Turkey, 2016, 22 Minutes
“Semazens” are dervishes perhaps known best for their mystical dance, the “sema”. This documentary sets out to chronicle the rigorous training required from a very early age to become a “semazen”, not least the process of spinning around a nail on the practice floor.

White

DIR: Yeşim Coşkun Turkey, 2016, 8 Minutes
A choreographical experiment.Innovaive and a great music score…
