  1. The Olive Tree

Iciar Bollain / Cinema of Conscience, Paseo de Espana, Terroir of Cinema, Woman Filmmaker / Germany, Spain / 2016 / 98 mins
CLOSING NIGHT UNDER THE STARS A richly textured environmental family drama that touches hearts and stirs our social conscience. When Alma's grandfather refuses to speak for years, grieving for a 2000 year-old olive tree that the family uprooted and sold (sadly a common reality in Castellón, Spain today), she embarks on a journey from Spain to Germany in order to retrieve the ancient tree and return it to the family orchard, so that he may have peace in his final days. The Olive Tree is written by Paul Laferty, Ken Loach’s long time collaborator and the writer of Bollain’s Oscar contender, “Even The Rain” (a WCFF special event in 2011). It is a perfect film for our “Films al Fresco™” Closing Night film under the stars.
