Benjamin (Gerard Depardieu), winemaker, sees his wife die in his arms following a long illness. Only one way for him: death. But a young Japanese woman, ( Takeda Eriko, also starring in “Parisiennes,” WCFF Sept. 24, 7pm) coming specially to taste his wine, will gently bring him to mourn the death of his wife by a series of symbols and exchanges between two cultures. A moving portrayal by French actor/winemaker Gérard Depardieu put this film at the top of our favorites.

OPENING NIGHT UNDER THE STARS Sideways goes French in this fond and gloriously witty comedy-drama starring Gérard Depardieu as a widowed farmer who’s willing to go to the lengths and breadths of rural France on an impromptu wine tour to bond with his son, the lonely big kid with a heart. “Three unlikely heroes (Gérard DEPARDIEU, Benoit POELVOORDE, Vincent LACOSTE) take to the road in this broad but pleasing picturesque wine tour featuring improbable sex and a kooky cameo from Michel Houellebecq.” Peter Bradshaw-·The Guardian
