Contemporary painter Adam Shaw is shown at work in his studio over the course of a year. He takes brisk walks in the vineyards, sculpts with rocks and lumber on his Glen Ellen terrace, improvising on his guitar, cooking meals for family and friends– painting, and explaining his philosophy and method of finding ‘the painting in the canvas.”   This film is an experiment in exploring the creative process and the result provides insight and understanding into the world of a special kind of Abstract painting.

“The Enduring Passion for Ink” consists of ten short films about ten Chinese ink painters living in China, Europe, and the United States. Ranging from 78 to 38 years old, some remain embedded in the circle of Chinese ink connoisseurs while others are famous on the international art circuit, but all face the same choices: Why ink? How is ink’s expressive range distinct from that of other artistic media? How does the artist approach issues such as tradition, creative innovation, and personal expression?

In Person: Britta Erickson and Zheng Chongbin, an abstract painter living in Marin County, will attend the screening.
