Enzo Avitabile Music Life
Directed by Jonathan Demme
Jonathan Demme, a WCFF Alumnus, has delivered another of his films that share his passion for music. This time it’s new film is about Enzo Avitabile, a well-known figure on the world music scene, his music and Naples. It is the fruit of the two artists’ reciprocal esteem for one another. It is also the result of many years spent following the musical artistry of Enzo Avitabile who is recognized for his passion for research of new sounds and musical experimentation. The Music Conservatory, Jazz, Pop, Afro-American Rhythms and Sacred Chants have all inspired his music. A non-conformist, Avitabile has bypassed show business rules, looking beyond the commercial and overcoming established limits. Music has always played a decisive role in Demme’s films. Over the years, this passion has been expressed in stunning videos of artists such as Bruce Springsteen, New Order and The Pretenders, and above all, a series of critically acclaimed documentaries including the nonpareil Talking Heads film Stop Making Sense which the Wine Country Film Festival projected in 35mm outdoors on a huge panel of Christo’s Running Fence. “ I was listening to a radio program while driving across the George Washington Bridge in New York six years ago, when I first encountered the music of Enzo Avitabile and my life changed” states Demme. His new film gives us the incredible opportunity to experience a story told through the eyes of one of the greatest directors in the world, not only about the music of the unique artist that is Enzo Avitabile, but also of Naples, a city full of treasures and contradictions. In an incredible jam session guest musicians from around the globe play with Avitabile including Eliades Ochoa, Naseer Shamma, Gerardo Nunez, Trilok Gurtu, among others. The Modern Master Jonathan Demme visited the Wine Country Film Festival to receive a Tribute in 1988 when he, along with Dean Stockwell presented “Married To The Mob” in a “secret” world premiere.
This film is but one of several in this year’s WCFF focus on MUSIC IN FILM.
